Tokyo Motor Show of Next-Generation Powertrains
Honda took advantage of the Tokyo Motor Show to reveal its new lineup of next-generation powertrains, and it looks like direct injection and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) are on the menu.
The 4-cylinder engines that will likely make it to North America will displace 1.5, 1.8 and 2.4 litres and prove more fuel-efficient and slightly more potent thanks to a new VTEC variable-valve timing setup and friction reduction measures.
The 3.5L and 3.7L V6s currently used by Honda and Acura will be replaced by redesigned 3.5L mills producing 5% more ponies and sipping 10% less fuel.
A start/stop system will also be on board to help boost fuel economy.
As for the CVT, it will debut in the automaker’s compact and midsize cars.
The green side of the Force
Honda has also developed a new hybrid system dubbed SH-AWD, which combines the 3.5L V6, two electric motors (one up front and one in back), all-wheel drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The automaker says the system will have the grunt of a V8 but be as fuel efficient, if not more, than a 4-cylinder.
A new electric powertrain is also in the cards, featuring a 210 km range and a charging time of less than 3 hours from a 240 volt outlet.
