Honda CEO wanted more exports from the U.S.
Honda CEO Takanobu Ito wants Japanese carmakers increased exports from the United States to offset the impact of the strong yen, he said in an interview published on Monday.

"Exports of our U.S. plants only 6-7 percent of production., But they should be able to do better than that," said Ito told the Wall Street Journal, AFP reported.

"If there is enough demand from other regions for vehicles bigger, then approaching 20 percent may be possible," he added.

While the strengthening of the yen retreated from a record reached last year, sustained gains makes exports from Japan more expensive, and Ito said Honda may increase shipments abroad from domestic factories.

"Old structure that relies on Japan as the main export foothold unnatural," he said.

Honda, Japan's third largest automaker, is now exported from the United States five models - sedan Accord and Civic, Pilot and MDX SUV and Odyssey minivan.

Last year, the company exported 55,000 vehicles from North America.

Also last year, the company was experiencing production delays triggered by the earthquake-tsunami disaster in Japan and record flooding in Thailand. This year, the company was back in full production.
